22nd March 2004An article in yesterday's Whangerei "Northern Advocate" newspaper headlined "Mystery mass excites hunters", reports on a possible wreck find on Ripiro Beach in the Kaipara district on the northern west coast of the North Island. The proton magnetometer used in this search was our AX2000 Proton Magnetometer. "Using a proton magnetometer the searchers have come across a large buried object which local maritime historian, Noel Hilliam, describes "as very exciting and it may prove to be the oldest European wreck so far discovered on the coast". Noel believes the ship was wrecked before 1816 as it was not there then when Samuel Marsden documented a trek up the beach and there is no recorded wreck in that particular area. It is believed the mystery wreck was already buried in the sand at that time and it is likely the find will rekindle talk of Portuguese caravels exploring the NZ coast. The magnetometer indicated to Mr Hilliam that the mass outlined was that of a ship. Supri Soengkomo, an Indonesian geophysicist now living in NZ who accompanied the searchers, although excited by the discovery buried under several metres of sand, is more cautious on what the find may be. He will create a computer model of the mystery wreck and it is hoped to firm up on excavation plans in the next few weeks." 4th January 2004Aquascan provided equipment support for Arqueonautas Worldwide SA in Phase 1 of the Nampula Province Area Project. From October-December 2003 the Arqueonautas team conducted a survey of the historical wreck site. The 38cm Loop with 20m (65ft) cable allows the sensing loop to be slowly towed behind a boat or simply lowered down for drift searching. This system of operation allows metallic contact areas to be located prior to deploying a diver.
